For the last several years, BMW showed new\ntech at CES that may be added to its cars at some point. This year it wasn\u2019t\nthe tire shredding capability of an M-car, but more of a concept display and it\nincluded some of the best snacks at the show. (Although the Dell\/Alienware area\ntakes top prize on snacks and beverages.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BMW also did something unprecedented for CES;\nthey gave rides anywhere you wanted to go in Vegas much as an Uber\/Lyft. But\nnot in any standard BMW. There were a few prototype i3 \u201cUrban Suite\u201d cars for\nthis purpose. The i3 is one of their two true electric cars \u2026 the only car\nunder six figures probably sold anywhere on the planet that is totally\nconstructed of carbon fiber. That is mainly the calling card of Ferrari and Lamborghini.\nCrazy expensive, but probably the future of all cars due to the extreme\nstrength and lightness of carbon fiber. I have a wallet made of it and titanium\nthat is so light it\u2019s easy to forget it\u2019s in your pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Urban Suite (I\u2019m betting) will never hit\nthe production lines and that\u2019s a shame \u2026 I\u2019d buy one. In Asia and Europe, big\nshot execs commonly use extra length cars that are essentially rolling offices as\nthey are chauffeured around.  Extra long BMWs,\nMBs and Audis are the norm for this type of use. The i3 prototype is a mini\nversion that can actually maneuver around tiny streets in Asia and Europe. It\neven has a desk! (oh, and an electric footrest!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car itself is dead-silent as it gets around and the size is perfect for congested streets. I was struck by the \u201ccommon sense\u201d this thing made. Safe, practical (at least for BMW) and within the ability of most folks to own one. Super cheap to operate \u2026 Essentially there is almost NO maintenance beyond keeping it clean, along with tires and wiper blades replacement. Many of the better designed electric cars do require an inexpensive battery cooling system fluid flush every five to ten years. Beyond that and a new air freshener, there\u2019s really not much to do to keep it running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
