Epiphany \u2026 yes, that\u2019s what is it was \u2026 an epiphany upon waking. I have to guess I\u2019ve spent the last forty years as a certified geek \u2026 (and this is before the word \u201cgeek\u201d was applied in the oddly admirable fashion that it is today) \u2026 and yet the thought that had never occurred to me before was: \u201chow do you know if you are a geek\u201d? Not a wannabe Best Buy shopper-style geek, \u2026 but a genuine, 190 proof, card-carrying, technoholic geek? I very reasonably concluded that everyone would like to claim to have a trace of geek in them; but \u201cgeekiness\u201d can not be measured like an \u201cold school\u201d rotary volume knob, but more like binary code \u2026 either you are \u201c1\u201d, or you are not \u201c0\u201d. So there has to be a litmus test to wear the transistor-studded \u201cCrown of Geek\u201d. And as such, there must be a check list. Geekdom requires a \u201cten out of ten\u201d.<\/p>\n
#10) You run across a particularly interesting piece of technology, and your first thought is: Do I have the correct tools to take it apart?<\/p>\n
#9) You find an interesting item that you have absolutely no use for, but buy it anyway to figure out a use for it.<\/p>\n
#8) When you find out that your interesting item can\u2019t be used effectively, you still won\u2019t sell it or throw it out \u2026 especially after all the time you have invested in it.<\/p>\n
#7) You finally realize that no computer monitor is big enough.<\/p>\n
#6) You find that you save time and money by simply buying batteries by the case.<\/p>\n
#5) You won\u2019t share your favorite \u201cunderground\u201d resource for cheap (and sometimes borderline illegal) techno items … like your 10th newest hand held laser almost powerful enough to bring down satellites.<\/p>\n
#4) You worry your soldering iron doesn\u2019t have the correct tips for your new project, \u2026 even if you don\u2019t know what that new project is yet.<\/p>\n
#3) You just don\u2019t have time to read the instruction manuals.<\/p>\n
#2) You actually know what a VOM is, and how to use it. And find it interesting!<\/p>\n
#1) You wake up out of a sound sleep due to a nightmare of dropping your new iPhone and cracking the screen \u2026 then after awakening, suddenly realizing it has to be taken apart to be fixed, you feel better \u2026<\/p>\n
